Gujarat High Court Upholds Death Sentences for 38 Convicts in 2008 Ahmedabad Serial Blasts Case
The Gujarat High Court has upheld the death sentences of 38 convicts and life imprisonment for 11 others in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blasts case. The verdict confirms the special court’s 2022 judgment against Indian Mujahideen members involved in the coordinated attacks that killed 56 people and injured 200 others.
A division bench comprising Justice A Y Kogje and Justice Samir Dave rejected all appeals filed against the lower court’s order and confirmed the sentences awarded to members of the terrorist organisation Indian Mujahideen in the case.
The serial blasts occurred on July 26, 2008, when 21 bomb explosions struck Ahmedabad within a span of 70 minutes, killing 56 people and injuring around 200 others. Several hospitals in the city were also targeted during the coordinated attacks.
In 2022, a special court had sentenced 38 members of Indian Mujahideen to death in connection with the blasts. The court had also awarded life imprisonment to 11 other convicts.
The Gujarat High Court’s decision upholds the punishment imposed in one of the country’s major terror cases, confirming the special court’s judgment against those convicted for their involvement in the deadly Ahmedabad serial blasts.
